- What if traffic dropped due to algorithm update vs content quality?
- Diagnose first; refresh second. Algorithm-driven drops sometimes need positioning shifts (different angle, different structure), not surface refresh. Content-quality drops are the textbook refresh case. - How often should we run the refresh cycle?
- Active libraries (40+ pieces shipping per quarter): quarterly cycle on the decaying queue, monthly on critical pieces. Slower programs: semi-annual full audit, with monthly triage of any sudden traffic drops. The cycle compounds when run regularly: programs that audit annually catch decay too late; programs that audit weekly burn editorial capacity that should be producing new work. Quarterly is the working default.
- Should we refresh AI-generated old content too?
- Yes, with extra QA. AI-generated content from 2-3 years ago often shows the era's prompt-thinking, generic phrasings, and hallucinated facts the team did not catch. Light edits on AI-original content rarely produce content that competes with newer pieces.
- What if the library is mostly dead pieces? Should we just retire all of them?
- Often, partly. If 80% of pieces produce less than 200 sessions in 90 days, the answer is usually yes-mostly: retire the long tail with redirects to relevant survivors, refresh the small head that has equity, and use the audit as the moment to surface whether the program should restructure into hubs (where the lift compounds) rather than continuing to produce isolated articles.
